Eduppu @Anandapuram, Kannur, Kerala

Built in, 1950

Situated @ Kodolipram.

Anandapuram at Kodolipram was built in 1950. It was meant to be a house to stay during the paddy sowing time to take care of the crop. But once Kalliat partition happened grandpa decided to convert Anandapuram into his permanent residence. This meant that the amenities in the house needed to be increased and carried on on constructing additional rooms giving no credence to the accepted Thachu Shastra methodology. People believe that the struggle that the family went thru was because of this negligence. However Anandapuram became the epicenter of a new family cluster.

The responsibility of construction was entrusted with his lieutenant— his right-hand man—Kunhiraman Nambiar. The necessary housing materials were procured by Mr. Raman. He was called “Vandikkaran Raman” as he owned a bullock cart.

Once the construction of the house was complete, our grandfather Kunhanandan Nambiar and his coterie moved into Anandapuram. At the time, it was the biggest pukka house in the village. The villagers used to refer to the house as “Eduppu” meaning “The Big House.” Even today Anandapuram is known as “Eduppu.”
